Vivek Kundra to OMB

Federal News Radio reported this morning that Vivek Kundra, D.C.’s Chief Technology Officer, has been formally tapped by the Obama administration as the new Office of Management and Budget administrator for e-government and information technology. Kundra will succeed Bush appointee Karen Evans at OMB. Kundra had previously been on the shortlist to be named Federal Chief Technology Officer, so while the job is a step up from his current gig, could it also be seen as a bit of letdown? Here’s how FNN describes

the job: “As OMB administrator, he will be responsible for the 25 e-government projects, the nine Lines of Business initiatives, cybersecurity, the Federal Enterprise Architecture, overseeing the federal IT budget of more than $70 billion and most other major IT initiatives.” Sounds like it’s more of a nuts and bolts position rather than acting as a figurehead, which might be more to Kundra’s tastes anyway.
