Pastor Lobs Inappropriate Questions at BOEE Hearing

Rev. Anthony Evans It’s admittedly hard to keep track of all the various hearings on possible same-sex marriage ballot measures that have been filed with the D.C. Board of Elections and Ethics, so you’d be forgiven if you didn’t know there had been another one last week. Luckily, DC Agenda’s Lou Chibbaro, Jr. was there to capture this exchange in all it’s insane glory: Rev. Anthony Evans, associate pastor of D.C.’s Mount Zion Baptist Church and a same-sex marriage opponent, questioned the board’s objectivity Jan. 27 in its role to decide whether a referendum seeking to ban gay marriage is an appropriate subject for the ballot. “Deep down in your heart, are you for same-sex marriage?” Evans asked during his testimony. “Are any of your family members

or friends homosexuals? Do you have any hatred in your heart towards the church … or towards clergy?” Evans, who was applauded by some of the hearing’s spectators, called on the two board members to withdraw from the proceedings if they “answered yes to any of these questions.” Sounds like the ministers who have been repeatedly losing their battles to prevent the District’s same-sex marriage law from going into effect are starting to lose their cool a little bit, doesn’t it? He might as well have opened with, “are you now, or have you ever been?” Unsurprisingly, the two board members present, Errol Arthur and Charles Lowery, chose to ignore Evans’ creepy questions.
