NYPD Chief Skeptical of Rudy’s Story

New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly isn’t buying any of Rudy’s stories:

Giuliani said Thursday the strange billing practice was not intended to hide anything but instead to speed payment of American Express credit card bills.

But the current New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said nowadays he knew of no problems with the delay of payments before Giuliani was mayor, when Kelly served under Mayor David Dinkins, or since.

“I don’t recall anybody, any statements about delay,” Kelly told reporters.

He said all bills for the police details for Dinkins and now for Mayor Mike Bloomberg are handled directly “through the police agency.”

So now we can scratch off a few of Rudy’s stories:

“It’s not true.” We definitely know it’s true.

“It’s SOP for the mayor’s office.” The police commissioner would be in a position to know how it’s supposed to work, given he’s held the position for a total of nearly eight years.

“We were making life easier for the NYPD.” Again, no other mayor in recent history has felt the need to aid the NYPD in billing practices.

“It’s a hit job.” Well, ok, possibly he has that one, at least in terms of timing. But that’s hardly the point, and I don’t think it’s going to supply a particularly compelling reason for GOP primary voters to miss all the rest.
