Exploring Healthcare Differences Again

By Alec MacGillis LOS ANGELES — It took a while during the back and forth about health care mandates, but Barack Obama stepped back from the policy pros and cons to manufacture the point he occasionally remembers to build on the trail: the differences amidst the candidates’ health care proposals are less crucial than who would actually be able to get health care reform passed in Washington. In an implicit slap at Clinton, he talked about the need for

transparency and carrying out negotiations in full public view, not “behind closed doors.” He did not state that argument as memorably as he did on the trail in Iowa a few months ago: All Democrats, he said, would “set up . . . plans you can buy into it whether you’re poor, whether you can’t afford it we’re going to subsidize it, we’re going to stress prevention, blah blah blah.”
